Wicker Park Community

The Chicago neighborhood of Wicker Park is located northwest of Downtown Chicago in a larger area of neighborhoods known as "West Town". The borders of the neighborhood are generally accepted as Ashland Ave to the east, the Bloomingdale "El" Line to the north, Division to the south, and Western Avenue to the west. These boundaries, as many of the Chicago neighborhoods, are not particularly exact but are widely held as such. Surrounding neighborhoods include East Village, Ukranian Village, Humboldt Park and Bucktown.

Wicker Park History

The origin of Wicker Park goes back to Charles and Joel Wicker who purchased 80 acres of land in 1870 to build a mixed-lot subdivision with a central park. The Great Chicago Fire (1871) helped as residents of the downtown area moved outward from the city itself. The area became home to many German and Swedish merchants. Entering the 1900s the area was known as "The Ethnic Gold Coast" and one of the strees, Hoyne, became known as "Beer Baron Row" for the many successful brewers who lived in that area. Polish immigrants in the early 1900s also came to Wicker Park along the recently-completed Elevated ("El") Train lines and the corner of Division/Milwaukee/Ashland came to be known as the "Polish Triangle".

In the 1940s-1950s Wicker Park great increasingly diverse ethnically. With rapid growth over the coming 3 decades came typical urban issues (such as insurance arson, closing factories and such) that seriously hurt Wicker Park and its residents. However the pendulum swung back in the 1980s as the area attracted artists with affordable housing and loft space in the old factories. The neighborhood has since became known for the hipster community of artists and musicians. Much of Wicker Park was designated as a Chicago Landmark District in 1991.
